I don’t know about you but this year has seemed extra dark to me. We had such a lovely fall and then BAM straight into winter with lots and lots of snow. The recent warm spell did provide some relief from the cold but the removal of the snow means we lost that much more of our winter “light”.
Green Connection was recently allowed to participate in an article in the Alaska Home Magazine done by Sarah Gonzales about Home Design Ideas for Beating Winter Blues. This article has a lot of great tips about decorating, design and accompaniments for your home to help get through the darkest part of the winter. It also really made me think about all of the things we Alaskans do to make the winters more enjoyable.
Get Out! It doesn’t matter if you snow machine or snow ski, you need to have some outdoor hobby to help get you through the winter! I have been told several times that if you get into one of these sports, you will never be sad to see the snow start!
Get Light! For some people this means SAD lights, for others it is a large picture window and some find their kick in a bonfire.
Get Gardening! Even if you are not an interior plant buff like us, you can vegetable garden or start your annuals for summer as early as January. Starting this early will mean huge, beautiful plants in May when you can finally put them outside.
Whatever you do, winter is too long to hole up inside watching television. We welcome people coming to our greenhouse anytime between 10:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday! Feel free to come in and get your dose of “green” and sun (if it is out) and see the new plants we have in stock!
